SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are trying to find a driver who hit and killed a jogger on the city’s Southeast side Sunday morning, then left the scene. Johnny Moore, 49, was found dead by his family members.
“After a certain amount of time, he hadn't returned home. The family members became very concerned. They went looking for him,” said Officer Douglas Greene, a spokesman for SAPD.
Greene said Moore was found in the grass along the eastbound lanes in the 5600 block of New Sulphur Springs Road. Investigators believe he was hit from behind as he jogged along the shoulder, headed toward his home.
"The individual in that vehicle did not stop to render aid,” Greene said. “They did not make any phone calls to 911. So at this point we're looking for the driver of that vehicle. "
Detectives did manage to collect some evidence, including fragments of a headlight and turn signal, Greene said. However, he said, they are still looking for someone to come forward with information about the driver.
“If there was a passenger in that car, we encourage them to call also,” he said. “We want to give as many answers as we can for the family.”
Greene said the car involved in the crash most likely has heavy front end damage to its passengers side. He urged everyone to be aware of anyone who suddenly has that type of damage and is not able to offer a reasonable explanation for it.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP (7867). Greene said SAPD is offering a reward of up to $5,000 in the case, and tips can be made anonymously.
