Helicopter search helped find fleeing men after crash into garage

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – The Bexar County Sheriff's Office arrested two men following a vehicle chase on the city's South Side that ended when the vehicle crashed into a garage.

According to Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman James Keith, around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a deputy observed the men in a Dodge Journey at a gas station off Highway 281 and Del Lago appearing to be engaged in an illegal activity. Moments later, the driver drove off after the deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over, Keith said.

The vehicle drove for approximately one mile on Highway 281 before pulling into the Rancho Sierra Apartments in the 1300 block of Mission Grande, Keith said.

The driver circled the inside of the complex for a few minutes before he and the passenger jumped out and attempted to run away. The Dodge eventually hit a garage door before stopping, Keith said.

San Antonio police caught the men nearby with the help of a helicopter.

The driver, Jesus Ortega, 28, was detained and found to have two active felony warrants for forgery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He now faces a charge of evading arrest.

The passenger, Bobby Torres, was taken into custody for an outstanding municipal warrant.
