1,000+ attend vigil for victims of Orlando shooting

Small crowd protested mayor while she offered a prayer

SAN ANTONIO – Over a thousand people came together Thursday night to hold a vigil and remember those killed in the Orlando, Florida massacre.

"We're here to show our support for the incident that happened at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida," Maria Cubero said.

Many in attendance joined in prayer, lit candles and fought back tears as the names of the 49 people killed were read out loud.

"I'm hoping that this tragic event that happened will start to bring people together. To start making people realize that this issue of hate has gone far enough," Analisa Leos-Garcia said.

Mayor Ivy Taylor also attended the vigil. A small group booed her while she addressed the crowd, upset that she did not support the city's nondiscrimination ordinance.

We asked Taylor about the crowd’s reaction.

"We won't always agree on everything but I think we should all agree that all humans are deserving of respect and dignity," said Taylor.

The rest of the tribute focused on a message of love and support.

"I think it’s support across all demographics. I don't think it’s necessarily just the LGBT community and I think it's great that there’s other supporters out there who are now seeing that the LGBT community isn't just this place that we don't want to be around it," Cubero said.
