SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio arson investigators are trying to determine what started a fire in a vacant home north of downtown.
Firefighters were called shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday to the 400 block of Lewis Street. They found a single-family home across the street from San Antonio College on fire.
At one point, more than two dozen fire units were working to contain the blaze. At least two of them remained there for hours to make sure that the fire would not reignite.
A neighbor said no one had lived in the home for some time. He said that although the windows and doors had been boarded up he often saw what appeared to be homeless people going in and out of the home.
The man also said the home still had several working gas lines attached, and he feared that it would catch fire.
Firefighters kept the fire from spreading beyond the home, which they said was destroyed.
