Union fighting to get indicted BCSO deputy job back

Avery Lawrence on administrative leave

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy has been indicted on charges of official oppression, violation of civil rights and class A assault bodily injury.

Avery Lawrence was indicted on the charges stemming from an incident that occurred in July 2014.

Lawrence was indicted, arrested and released on bond last week.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was terminated following an internal and criminal investigation, but an arbitrator ordered the BCSO to give the deputy his job back.

The head of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County said it will fight to get Lawrence his job back again.

"Avery's standing strong. He's already beat the same type of allegations before, in general, and he won,” Juan Contreras said. “So I don't know if it's an ‘I'm out to get you’ kind of thing or what, but he's definitely going to fight it."

Lawrence is currently on administrative leave. The Sheriff’s Office said it still in the process of terminating him again.
