Community gathers, calls for end to violence

Backpack drive for children held at rally

SAN ANTONIO – Members of law enforcement and activists gathering on the East Side are calling for an end to violence.

Bishop Rosita Williams organized Sunday's event at the Greater Faith Institutional Church. Among the attendees were local community organizers, religious leaders and Police Chief William McManus.

The speakers referenced recent officer-involved shootings across the country, saying violence is not the answer.

The rally also served as a backpack drive for children.

"It starts with the children," McManus said. "It starts with community engagement and it ends with community engagement. The more we have these conversations, the more people reach, the more people will hopefully have an understanding of what the issues really are."

Speakers at the event pleaded with the crowd to talk out concerns rather than resort to violence.
