Woman says man nearly sexually assaulted her in swimming pool

Sergio Melendez-Bernal, 25, facing charges

SAN ANTONIO – Sergio Melendez-Bernal, 25, is accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman at a swimming pool inside a gym on the property of the University of Texas Health Science Center.

The woman filed a report with UT System police describing the incident, which she said happened Aug. 6 at Gold's Gym.

An arrest warrant affidavit said she told police that a man with a towel around his waist, later identified as Melendez-Bernal, approached her as she was sunbathing and struck up a conversation. The affidavit said that when she got into the pool later, the suspect removed his towel, revealing that he was completely nude, and got into the water with her.

The woman told police that she felt uncomfortable and attempted to get out of the pool, but Melendez-Bernal grabbed her by the shoulders and told her to stay put, the affidavit said. She said he pulled her close to his naked body, the affidavit said.

The woman told police that Melendez-Bernal got scared off when another woman got into the pool and began swimming toward them.

He was arrested Monday on a charge of attempted sexual assault.
