SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer who saved three children from a burning apartment on the city's North Side was recognized Wednesday for his heroic efforts.
Officer Tim Bowen received commendations from the fire and police departments for his uncommon valor during the life-saving incident on July 18.
Bowen said he heard the children screaming from the second floor of the apartment building in the 9500 block of Lorene. As the fire quickly spread through the building, Bowen convinced the children to jump out of the window and into his arms.
The officer said he hopes the incident will inspire trust between his fellow officers and the communities they serve.
"There's a lot of negative (news) out there. A lot of hatred out there, right now, towards officers," he said. "Hopefully, this will show people we're not out there to hurt you. We're out there to help you."
Firefighters rescued a fourth child who did not jump.
The fire destroyed four apartments and sent other people running from their homes.
