San Antonio police spokesman Officer Doug Greene said Lopez was linked to the June 1 slaying of Ana Garza through DNA found at the scene. Lopez denied involvement in the killing but consented to a DNA test. Detectives came across Lopez while looking for another suspect, Abdi Abdi, Greene said.

Ana was shot in the head while she was sleeping at her family's home in the 800 block of Pecan Valley Drive. Police said some men tried to rob the child's stepfather, Carlos Aguilar, in front of the home. Ana was taken off life support and died June 8. Aguilar remains on life support.

Murjan Abdi and Abdi Abdi were also arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Ana's death.
