SAN ANTONIO – The "safe cars save lives" bus was in San Antonio Friday, providing free safety checks for vehicles, tires and car seats.
The U.S. Department of Transportation hosted the event at The Shops at La Cantera to spread awareness about vehicle and passenger safety.
They said heat and humidity can cause dangerous conditions for Texas drivers.
Experts at the event said about half the cars they checked had an open recall.
"We're seeing everything -- brakes, fuel pumps, engine modules, all kinds of stuff," said Mark Rosekind, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "And again, most people think they're OK. So it's a big surprise for some folks just to find out open recall. And again, free fix. Call a dealer and get it taken care of."
