FBI releases annual crime data

Violent crimes up, property crimes down

SAN ANTONIO – The FBI last week released its annual compilation of crime data, showing trends in violent and property crimes across the nation.

According to the new numbers, violent crimes were up 3.9 percent across the country from 2014 to 2015, but property crimes were down nationally. The report stated there were 1,197,704 violent crimes committed around the nation last year, which is still 16.5 percent lower than the rate in 2006.

Property crimes dropped 2.6 percent from 2014 to 2015, marking the 13th straight year that property crimes have declined.

The statistics are submitted to the FBI by law enforcement agencies across the country, including the San Antonio Police Department, which posts its data online.

SAPD’s data reflect a similar trend locally, with property crime experiencing a 4.9 percent decline from 2014 to 2015.  Like the national rates, San Antonio also saw an increase in violent crime, from 7,704 in 2014 to 8,594 in 2015.
