Man arrested after shoplifting, biting worker, police say

Crime Stoppers tips led police to Hector Martinez, 18

SAN ANTONIO – Hector Martinez, who is accused of shoplifting from a West Side department store then biting a worker who tried to stop him, has been arrested on a charge of robbery.

An arrest affidavit said that he turned himself in after his photo aired on local TV stations in a Crime Stoppers segment.

The affidavit said that San Antonio police believe Martinez is the man who was caught on surveillance cameras inside Macy's located in Ingram Park Mall on Sept. 15.

Police said the man in the photos had gone into a dressing room several times, carrying loads of clothing.

Loss prevention workers with the store said they heard him inside the dressing room, removing security sensors from the clothes and found the discarded sensors there after he left, the affidavit said.

When Martinez tried to leave the store with the clothing, the workers attempted to stop him, the affidavit said. They told police that's when Martinez bit one of them, drawing blood, and also hit another worker in the face.

The affidavit said that soon after police began receiving tips about Martinez's identity, he turned himself in and admitted to the crime.

A formal charge was filed against Martinez Wednesday.
