SUGAR LAND, Texas – A Houston area high school athlete died after competing in a swim meet Saturday morning, officials said.
A message posted on the school's Twitter page identified the student as Brian Yuen.
According to a written statement from the Fort Bend Independent School District, Yuen began experiencing a medical emergency after competing in an event at the Don Cook Natatorium. Staff called 911 and helped him until paramedics arrived.
Yuen died after being taken to a local hospital, officials said.
“The loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time,” district officials said in the statement.
Officials said that crisis teams will be at all FBISD high schools when classes resume Tuesday, but immediate support is being provided to the student’s fellow athletes.
A vigil for Yuen is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at Don Cook Natatorium.
