TxDOT gives residents first look at solution to combat slow traffic on Bandera at 1604

Proposed changes include realigning turn lanes, adding sidewalks

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Department of Transportation gave residents a first look at a solution to slow-moving traffic on Bandera Road at Loop 1604.

The proposed changes will affect both sides of Bandera at the intersection. TxDOT said improvements are needed because growth in the area is expected to continue, making traffic worse and creating safety issues.

Thursday’s meeting gave residents in the area a chance to take a look at the place. Some proposed improvements include realigning turn lanes and adding sidewalks.

The yearlong project shouldn’t hold up traffic too much, since most of the new lanes will go on existing greenspace.

People who live in the area say they think a temporary inconvenience is worth it.

“I think it's a necessary evil. I think we're going to have change, and the growth that we have in this area, we're just going to have to let that happen,” resident Mary Skekel said.

Construction for the $3.5 million project should start next fall and end in fall 2018.
