Mother mourns daughter, granddaughter killed in quadruple fatal accident

Two others killed in fiery wreck

SAN ANTONIO – The mother and grandmother of two victims killed last week in a head-on crash is mourning her loss.

“I ask myself why, why her?” said Esmeralda Santana through sobs.

Her daughter Rosemary Rios, 25, and Rios’ daughter, Aliza Maldanado, 7, were among four people who perished Friday night in a head-on crash on Applewhite Road.

Also killed in the crash were Steve Garcia and Melinda Rodriguez.

Authorities said Rodriguez was driving the SUV and apparently lost control. The vehicle jumped the median, crashed head-on with an 18-wheeler and burst into flames. The victims were burned beyond recognition.

“I feel like it’s just a dream and like I’m going to get up and everything is over,” Santana, the mother of six children, said as she wiped tears from her eyes.

“It’s just a big tragedy for us – very shocking. I just try to keep myself strong,” she said. “I have to keep myself strong for my other kids and my grandkids.”

She said memories are all she has left.

“I think about her and the good things, and that is what keeps me going, especially her smile.” Santana said.
