Firefighters battle 2-alarm 'suspicious' building fire on NW Side

Fire chief says 1 firefighter injured

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department is fighting what it’s calling a suspicious and dangerous structure fire.

It was reported at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Turtle Creek Event Center in the 3800 block of Parkdale Street off Interstate 10 near Wurzbach Road.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming through the roof of the abandoned building.

San Antonio fire Chief Charles Hood said crews originally tried to fight the fire from inside, but because of the deterioration and age of the building, they had to fight it from the outside.

One firefighter was injured when he fell through a step on a ladder and fell about 10 feet. He complained of minor pain and was conscious and alert when he was taken to University Hospital for evaluation.

Hood said the fire is suspicious, and the arson team will be investigating. The department is working with code enforcement officials to see if the building can be demolished or fenced so no one can get in after the fire is put out. The building is known for its indigent inhabitants.
