SAN ANTONIO – A man is dead after slipping under the waters of the San Antonio River while city park officers tried to save him.
The drowning happened around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
The park police officers responded to a call for a disturbed man on a bridge over the river in Brackenridge Park.
The man jumped into the river, but when he suddenly went under the water and didn't come back up the officers leapt in to search for him.
A firefighter also went into the river to search for the man.
The police chief says they found the man after he'd been underwater for several minutes.
EMS transported the man to the hospital, but he did not survive.
The chief says the man had slit his wrist before jumping into the water.
Police are investigating the drowning as a custodial death because the officers had contacted the man before he jumped into the river.
