10,000 BBQ meals made during plate sale for slain SAPD detective

Money raised will go to Detective Benjamin Marconi's family

SAN ANTONIO – More than 30 pit masters and volunteers prepared thousands of plates of barbecue Sunday to honor a fallen San Antonio police detective.

The sale was held two weeks to the day after Detective Benjamin Marconi was shot and killed outside the department's Public Safety Headquarters.

Organizers said the event started out as a small fundraiser but quickly grew and attracted attention from people across the nation.

In total, more than 10,000 plates of food were prepared.

Fifty percent of the money raised from the sale will go to the Marconi family, the rest of proceeds will go to the 100 Club of San Antonio and the SAPD Memorial Fund equally.

The organizer said that the left over food was donated to Haven for Hope and he hopes to make this an annual event.
