Co-workers describe deputy who died in sinkhole as sincere, hardworking

Deputy Dora Lina Nishihara died en route to work

SAN ANTONIO – Co-workers described a Bexar County sheriff’s deputy who was killed after falling into a massive sinkhole as a sincere and hardworking person.

Deputy Dora Lina Nishihara worked at the Cadena Reeves Justice Center. She was assigned to the security division, where she was often on guard as visitors passed through metal detectors.

People who worked with Nishihara said she was more than just a colleague. She was a friend.

“Linda, she had a good spirit. The first time I saw her, she just approached me and, you know, and she just talked to me. It was like I had known her forever. And she really is a nice person. I could not have met anyone nicer,” said Thelma Castillo, with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Nishihara was on her way to work when a portion of Quintana Road gave way. Her car, along with another vehicle, fell inside the sinkhole.

The driver of the other car was rescued. Nishihara was found dead at the scene.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
