Temporary hold facility opens in Rio Grande Valley amid surge of families crossing border

Center can hold up to 500 people

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – A temporary hold facility is now open in the Rio Grande Valley in response to the children and families continuing to cross the border illegally.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the facility can hold up to 500 people. The center is located near the international bridge in Donna.

Officials said in some circumstances, individuals may be required to stay at the facility for up to 72 hours.

CBP said it will keep the facility open as long as the number of families crossing the border continues to surge.
