Saving the bacon

The Red Cross on Sunday continued to help residents burned out of their homes a day earlier. About 55 firefighting units worked to put out a three-alarm fire Saturday at the Agave Apartments complex in downtown San Antonio. The San Antonio Fire Department said the blaze appeared to have started about 5:45 p.m. in a unit on the fifth floor of Building 6. Smoke billowed out of the back of the apartments at Cesar Chavez and South St. Mary’s Street. No residents or firefighters were injured in the blaze and all the pets made it out alive -- including a pet pig.

Taylor vs. Nirenberg vs …?

And then there were two declared candidates for San Antonio mayor: Incumbent Ivy Taylor and Coucilman Ron Nirenberg. Nirenberg was first elected to the District 8 seat in 2013 and was re-elected in 2015. Over the last three years, the councilman has focused on challenges such as improving transportation infrastructure, embracing new technology and creating jobs. The announcement comes days after Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff endorsed Taylor in her bid for re-election. There is still time for other candidates to throw their hat into the ring. The election is slated for May 6, 2017.

The group -- two Republicans and two Democrats -- called for an investigation into American intelligence agencies' conclusion that Russian hacking was intended to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.

Football fever

By topping Indy 22-17, they also got their first sweep of the Colts in franchise history. In high school play, the Steele Knights used a dominant defense and a mix of big plays on offense to beat Katy Cinco Ranch 35-14 at the Alamodome Saturday night to advance to the Class 6A Division II state championship game. The Knights will play DeSoto next Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
