Police standoff with suicidal man on North Side ends peacefully

Man was threatening to commit suicide in shootout with police

SAN ANTONIO – A man who San Antonio police said was threatening to commit suicide in a shootout with officers has been taken into custody peacefully.

Lt. Lee Rakun said the man, who was distraught after a fight with his wife, called 911 around 4:15 a.m. Friday and threatened to use police to commit suicide.

Officers arrived and found him near the 99 Cent store just off Thousand Oaks near Jones-Maltsberger Road.

Rakun said he appeared to be armed with some sort of long gun.

Police kept watch on the man by helicopter and from the ground.

When he made a move with which they were "not comfortable," officers deployed bean bags, Rakun said.

No one was injured in the incident.

Rakun said the man was armed with an air rifle and not a real gun.

During the standoff, police shut down a section of Thousand Oaks in the area.
