Man killed after being shot multiple times at home on Southeast Side

Other man shot near ear, transported to hospital

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE: The man killed in the shootout on the Southeast Side was identified as 61-year-old John Harmon.

ORIGINAL STORY: Police responded to a fatal shootout on the Southeast Side on Friday night that left one man dead and another wounded.

Police said a man in a car pulled up to a house on Nash Boulevard near Pickwell. They said the man made some sort of demand to another man in his 20s who was at the home.

“He had said that he showed up and said, 'You know why I’m here’ kind of thing. He was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’” said Sgt. David Renn, with the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said the uncle of the man in his 20s saw what was happening outside.

“He (the uncle) went inside the house and retrieved a gun for himself. He came outside, at which time a gunfight ensued,” Renn said.

Next-door neighbor Steve Stutts said he heard the commotion.

“I figured it was gunshots. You know, I mean, when you hear that, it’s best to close the door and call the authorities,” Stutts said.

When police arrived, they found the uncle lying behind an RV out front. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The people in the car fled. Police ended up finding at least one of them a little over a mile away at City Base Landing and Southeast Military Drive.

“He called the police, and he was also shot one time. He had a bullet wound to the ear area, to my understanding,” Renn said.

Police said they believe a female was with the man in the vehicle while he was at the house. It’s unclear if they were together at the second scene. Why they were at the home in the first place is unclear.

“The nephew says he didn’t have any idea who these people were,” Renn said.

Police said the man in the car was taken to the San Antonio Military Medical Center in fair condition. There is no word yet on if he will face charges.

Police said they will continue to investigate this shooting.
