First SA homicide victim of 2017 identified

Mario Hernandez, 38, was found dead Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of the first San Antonio homicide victim of 2017.

Mario Hernandez, 38, was found dead Sunday at a motel in the 400 block of Enrique M. Barrera Parkway.

According to a police report, an officer was patrolling several motel parking lots looking for stolen vehicles and saw a disturbance between two people. Police said that's when the officer discovered the victim.

31-year-old Daniel Reyes has been arrested and charged with the murder.

According to police, Reyes told them that he got into a fight with the victim while he was defending a woman. Reyes is now being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Investigators said Hernandez died from blunt force trauma to the head and lacerations to the neck.
