Driver tries to ram police cars, gets hurt falling into ditch

Incident began around 12:30 a.m. on I-35 southbound at Rittiman Rd

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have arrested a man they say tried to ram his vehicle into two police cruisers after refusing to pull over during a traffic stop overnight.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. on Interstate 35 southbound at Rittiman Road.

Police said the officers were attempting to pull the vehicle over for traffic warrants when the driver sped off, leading them on a short chase. The suspect attempted to ram his vehicle into a police car before driving off, police said.

Police said the driver then had a vehicle accident on the southbound I-35 access road before again trying to ram into another police car.

The driver finally tried to run from his vehicle on the access road police said, but the suspect did not notice a 10-foot drainage ditch and fell directly into it breaking his ankle. The suspect was caught and taken to Northeast Baptist Hospital for his injury.

Police said the man will be charged with evading arrest and assault on a police officer among other possible charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
