SAN ANTONIO – This year marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Scout cookie sales.

The 2017 Girl Scout cookie season began Jan. 1 with Scouts taking cookie orders. Wednesday, more than one million boxes of Girl Scout cookies will be distributed to the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest business in the world run by girls.

The success of Girl Scout cookie sales generates nearly $800 million for Girl Scouts nationwide, helping girls develop essential life skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Seventy-five percent of current female senators are Girl Scout alumni, according to Girlscouts.org.
