SAPD: Man drank 8-10 beers before being hit by VIA bus

63-year-old man survived accident

SAN ANTONIO – On-board video released by VIA Metropolitan Transit on Tuesday showed a man on a bicycle weaving along a West Side sidewalk moments before falling off his bike and being hit by a bus.

The 63-year-old man, who was hospitalized but survived the Jan. 27 accident, told San Antonio police officers that he drank "eight to 10" beers before the crash, but could not remember what happened, according to an SAPD report provided to KSAT 12.

Video obtained by KSAT 12 through an open records request showed the man waving his arm toward the bus as it approached him along Castroville Road just blocks from San Fernando Cemetery.

The man then fell off the bike, colliding with the front of the bus.

The bus driver, who was not cited in the accident, was able to stop the bus before its back tires ran over the man.

VIA sent KSAT 12 News this statement about the incident: "The accident classification and performance review process is under way. The results of this review are a factor in determining any further action."
