Fire believed to have started in refigerator

Investigators said an elderly woman in one apartment had to be helped out of her home, while the people on the other side escaped on their own.

The fire destroyed the roof on the building and gutted both units. Firefighters estimate the damage at about $100,000.

Firefighters said it appears the fire started in a refrigerator-freezer in one unit, then spread to the side where the elderly woman lived.

The duplex is part of the T. L. Shaley apartments, which are run by the San Antonio Housing Authority.
