Empty Bowls event raises money, awareness for homelessness, hunger

Event held, money raised for Samministries

SAN ANTONIO – Some one-of-a-kind, handcrafted bowls were sold for $20 apiece Sunday in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness and hunger.

Sunday was the 17th annual Empty Bowls event at the Southwest School of Art.

Samministries, the San Antonio Potters Guild and the San Antonio Art Glass Guild teamed up at the event to sell the bowls.

All the proceeds from the bowls benefit Samministries,  which provides housing and supportive services for the homeless.

"Every dollar here is donated," Navarra Williams, president and CEO of Samministries, said. "The Artists Guild and Glass Guild donate their money, donate their works so this can be a really successful event."

Since the Empty Bowls event started, about $475,000 has been raised for Samministries.

The Samministries' president says he'd like to see $75,000 raised this year so that they can continue to provide assistance to the homeless.
