SAN ANTONIO – A father's heavy new mission is raising money for a reward to help police find his son's killer. Albert Callahan, 20, was shot and killed on January 28 outside a South Side motel.
Callahan's father wants more than closure. He wants safety for his community.
"I can't even put it in words. This is my baby. I know where my boy is. He's with Christ, but it don't make it easy for us here," said Homer Callahan while holding back tears.
It's been a month and a half since his son was shot and killed outside a Days Inn motel off Interstate 37.
"He called me, his mom, and was looking for gas money and that's where he was, I guess at the hotel. He was just parked there waiting to get gas. When I picked up the truck, it was on empty," Homer Callahan said.
Witnesses heard one gunshot and saw a gray Chrysler 300 speed away from the motel. Days after the shooting, police released a picture of a person of interest. The man posted a picture of himself on Facebook with blood on his forehead, claiming someone hit him in the head with a bottle and threatened to find them.
"We just want some justice and also we don't want to see somebody else's family going through the same thing we're going through," Homer Callahan said.
What's left is the aching loss of a young man who was passionate about fishing, the San Antonio Spurs and giving to others.
"When I would tell him, save your money, (he would say) 'No, it's all right. They need it.' He would give it away. That's the kind of person he was," Homer Callahan said.
Homer Callahan knows tips from the community can't bring his son home, but they can help answer his questions and ease his pain.
Crime Stoppers set up a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Homer Callahan and his family have raised another $2,000 to add to that.
