Man found shot dead in home on city's East Side identified by brother

SAN ANTONIO – A man was found shot dead in his East Side home Saturday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Piedmont Avenue. The victim's brother, Alfonso Varela Jr., identified the victim as Ernest Varela, 60.

Homicide detectives began processing the scene just before 1 p.m. They left shortly before 5 p.m. Animal Care Services also responded and pulled something out of the home.

Police said there are no suspects at this time. They are looking into the possibility that Ernest Varela may have died Friday night or Saturday morning. A neighbor said he heard gunshots about 4 a.m.

Details about where Ernest Varela was shot or how many times aren't being given at this time.

Alfonso Varela said his brother had lived in the home for 12 years. 

KSAT 12 tracked crime within a mile of the location where the man was found dead. There have been at least 20 violent crimes since the beginning of this year, including eight aggravated assaults.
