First glimpse of San Pedro Creek restoration project shows progress

Concrete-lined ditch to become natural habitat, linear park

SAN ANTONIO – The county showed off the initial progress being made along San Pedro Creek downtown as crews continue to transform the concrete-lined ditch into a linear park and natural habitat.

The creek is the original site of the Valero De San Antonio Mission.

The goal of the project is to improve the creek’s function in flood control, while revitalizing the area as a park.

The first phase of improvements will include 4 miles of trail and 11 acres of landscaping.

"It will ignite development (and) bring up all the properties values," Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo said. “Most importantly, it will be a great place for the community to come down and enjoy themselves and enjoy the history."

Phase 1 should be complete by 2018, in time for SA 300, the city’s tricentennial celebration.
