Family of 7 loses South Side home after fire destroys it

SAN ANTONIO – A family of seven on the South Side was left without a home this afternoon after a fire damaged it.

The fire happened just after noon Thursday on Iroquois Street near Interstate 35 and Somerset Road.

A man was asleep inside the home when the fire happened but managed to get out safely.

A neighbor, who is a friend of the family, said the victims lost everything in the fire and is asking for community assistance to help the family.

"I’m heartbroken, because, I mean, I get to go back to my home. Where are they going to go? My child gets to come home and sit at the kitchen table and eat dinner. Where are they going to have their next dinner? It's horrible,” Aide Garcia said.

Firefighters said the home was a total loss and the family had no insurance. It's unclear how the fire started, but they believe it may have started in the kitchen and spread to the back of the home.
