Woman died protecting child during crash, police say

Child expected to be OK

SAN ANTONIO – A woman was killed in a rollover crash on Monday that sent a child to the hospital on San Antonio Northeast Side.

The crash occurred near the intersection of NE Loop 410 and Interstate 35 South exit.

Police said the woman was driving when she lost control, over-corrected and crashed into a traffic pole.

The child was found underneath the woman, leaving police to believe she was trying to protect the child, the officer at the scene said.

Gustavo Lopez stopped after seeing the wreckage and helped pull the child to safety.

"The baby was crying, but she was alive. Thanks to God,” he said. “What I did was just pulled her out of the car seat and bring her out to safety, because the car was smoking out and I was like maybe the car will catch on flames."

The toddler was taken to the hospital and expected to be OK.

Neither the age nor the identity of the woman has been released.
