Initiative will make school properties by day community parks by night

SAN ANTONIO – School by day, community park by night: It's an initiative that's being set up to help the southeastern neighborhood surrounding Mission Academy.

The city, the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, the San Antonio Independent School District and San Antonio Sports are all pitching in to help the community school park become a reality.

Students and neighborhood residents will be able to enjoy a new basketball court, a tennis court, a walking trail and more."I think it's great to have gates unlocked, the community welcomed, and this is a way to get San Antonio to be one of the fittest cities in the country," George Block, with the San Antonio Sports Foundation, said.

It won't be the only school community park in the city. There are 16 other school properties that function as community parks during after-school hours.
