AUSTIN – A San Antonio detective killed in the line of duty was honored Monday at the 2017 Texas Peace Officers' Memorial service in Austin.

Detective Benjamin Marconi was shot and killed during a traffic stop outside Public Safety Headquarters in November.

His name, and the names of 19 others, will be added to the memorial. That includes the five Dallas officers shot dead by a sniper during a "Black Lives Matter" rally last summer.

Last week, SAPD awarded Marconi the Purple Heart.

KSAT spoke to Marconi’s daughter, who said the honor helps keep her father’s memory alive.

“Life has not been easy,” said Jacy Lewis.

Lewis struggles to make sense of the ambush that killed her father late last year.

“I won't sugarcoat it. It's hard, but meeting people that I don't know, that are grieving along with our family, makes it just a little bit easier,” Lewis said.

The procession stretched from the Congress Avenue Bridge to the south side of the Texas Capitol.

In addition to the monument and biannual ceremony, the Texas Peace Officers' Memorial offers college scholarships to fallen officers' children and supports research to find and honor fallen officers.
