Problematic curve on Southeast Side repaired

SAN ANTONIO – Residents of one Southeast Side neighborhood said they feel safer after the city fixed a design flaw on a street.

Manuel Martinez lives at the corner of Hartford Avenue and Pecan Valley Drive, also known as the “Hartford Curve.”

Cars often hit the curve and have smashed into Martinez’s yard at least seven times.

After years of complaining to the city, District 3 took $23,000 out of its discretionary fund to fix the design flaw. Crews had to cut into a big chunk of Martinez’s yard, but he said he doesn’t mind.

Martinez said he cares about the safety of his neighborhood and the students at Foster Elementary across the street.

“It cost quite a bit I imagine, because a lot of people put a lot into it,” Martinez said.

Martinez said he’s even having a yard sale this weekend. It’s something he’s never felt safe doing before.
