Petition filed to rename Rio Grande Street to Mel Waiters Way

SAN ANTONIO – Rio Grande Street on the city's East Side could soon have a new name.

A petition has been submitted to rename the street to Mel Waiters Way, after a musician who lived in that area.

The name change would affect north and south Rio Grande Street from Larry Street to Martin Luther King Drive.

Waiters’ daughter said renaming the street would be something great for the East Side.

"I really feel like from my father's generation, it will definitely say to the East Side of San Antonio ‘Well done.’ But from my generation, you know for San Antonio, it just says this is possible to go off and chase your dreams and obtain that and this will really give a sense of pride to the East Side,” said Brittney Waiters, Mel Waiters’ daughter.

Mel Waiters graduated from Highlands High School and is best known for his hit songs such as “Hole in the Wall” and “I Got My Whiskey.”

Mel Waiters gave back to his community by supporting and donating his time to local nonprofits on the East Side.
