100 Club of SA to help families of fallen, injured SAPD officers

Families of Officers Miguel Moreno, Julio Cavazos to receive monetary gift

SAN ANTONIO – The 100 Club of San Antonio plans to help the families of the two San Antonio police officers who were killed or wounded in a shooting Thursday.

Richard Miller, president of the 100 Club, said at a news conference Monday that the organization will provide a monetary gift to the families of slain Officer Miguel Moreno and Officer Julio Cavazos, who was wounded in the shooting. Police officials said the officers were responding to a report of a vehicle burglary when they were shot by Andrew Bice in the 200 block of West Evergreen Street. Bice shot and killed himself during the confrontation, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Miller said that he will be meeting with the two families soon.

He said the community has really stepped up to help the organization with funds since the shooting.

"The outpouring of calls. The request to help the 100 Club. We are very thankful for the community and what they do for our police officers," Miller said.

Miller said the mission of the 100 club is primarily to provide support for families of police officers, firefighters and other first responders killed in the line of duty. But the generosity of San Antonio residents has allowed the nonprofit to extend its services to the families of injured officers.

Cavazos' condition was upgraded to good Monday, and memorial services for Moreno were announced.
