GARDEN RIDGE, Texas – The life of a young boy who died from a rare form of cancer was celebrated this weekend.
River Laurence bravely battled neuroblastoma for almost half his life and passed away last month at the age of 5.
A memorial was held for River on Sunday, followed by a celebration of his life at the Garden Ridge Community Center.
The 5-year-old loved firefighters and aspired to be one, and on Sunday fire crews made it a point to stop by and pay their respects to the young boy.
"I recently realized from day one of sharing his story, River stopped being ours or just ours River belongs to a lot of people in our community now,” Oscelyn Laurence, River’s mother, said. “I mean coast to coast even."
His mother said firefighters from as far as New York state came to participate in Sunday's event.
