Councilwoman Gonzalez to target, fight crime in District 5 business area

65 burglaries, 8 robberies reported in 2-mile radius in 3 months

SAN ANTONIO – A crime trend on the city's West Side has residents on edge, District 5 City Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales said Wednesday.

A man was arrested Monday in connection with the robbery of two pizza restaurants on West Commerce and leading police on a chase.

According to the KSAT 12 News Crimetracker, eight robberies and 65 burglaries have been reported in the last three months within a 2-mile radius of Monday's robberies.

Gonzalez, who has been working with San Antonio police Chief William McManus to fight neighborhood crime, wants to use the same tactics in the business community.

"Having a task force on commercial strips like Commerce or Zarzamora or Buena Vista or Culebra could be another method where we're in communication," she said. "Now with technology, we need to be able to take advantage of those groups and those networks and just alert each other in the event that there's something going on."

Gonzales said she believes networks connected by texting or emails in West Side neighborhoods has helped community policing efforts to prevent crime.

She said she plans to bring the idea up Wednesday night at the West Side Business Alliance meeting.
