Cornyn, who is from San Antonio, introduced a bill last month that would authorize The Smithsonian to create a museum honoring American Latinos.

The lawmaker said more than one-third of Texans are Latino, and they deserve to be represented.

"As a Texan, it seems so obvious. And as somebody from San Antonio and recognizing the tremendous contribution that Latinos, Hispanics have made to our culture," he said. "This isn't just about Latinos and Hispanics, this is about Americans."

The Smithsonian's board of regents will have to work with a museum board of trustees to determine where the museum will be located.

Backers of the bill say funding will be key to speeding up the process.
