Police identify man who shot at officers on West Side

Suspect evaded traffic stop

SAN ANTONIO – Police identified the man who turned his gun on officers and was shot multiple times early Friday morning.

Police said 19-year old Juan Manuel Rogelio-Gonzalez is in critical but stable condition. He is being charged with attempted capital murder and evading arrest.

Rogelio-Gonzalez was initially pulled over on a traffic stop. Police said he was swerving from lane to lane.

Instead of stopping, Rogelio-Gonzalez sped off. Police were able to get his license plate and stopped chasing on the ground. They followed him through the air with their Eagle helicopter.

Officers were waiting for him at his home in the 3300 block of West Woodlawn.

“Officers were here waiting for him, which is the registered address to the car. Once they tried to get him out of the car, he got out with a gun and starter shooting. Officers returned fire and struck him multiple times,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.

A total of three officers fired their guns.

This is the third officer-involved shooting of July and the second this week. McManus said he hopes the violence will soon stop.
