Pickup truck driver hit 4, killed 3 people who were helping man, authorities say

ATASCOSA COUNTY – A dramatic chain of events led to the death of three people and the hospitalization of another early Saturday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 45-year-old Rene Perez was leaving the Southside Bar and Grill in Atascosa County -- south of Lytle -- around 2 a.m. when he fell off his bike and landed in the middle of Interstate 35.

Perez's nephew, Ernesto, and two others tried to help him when a pickup truck hit all four people, DPS officials said.

Perez, his nephew and a woman identified as 41-year-old Yvonne Zavala died on the scene, DPS officials said. The other person, 47-year-old Eloyed Castro, was airlifted to University Hospital in serious condition.

Officials said the driver stopped to render aid and is currently not facing charges. DPS is investigating the crash.
