Toyota Center, NRG Center to be opened as additional shelters for flooding evacuees


HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has announced that the doors to Toyota Center will be open to evacuees due to help alleviate some of the crowding at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmet said NRG Center would be opened to evacuees at 10 p.m. Tuesday. The center is planning on being able to accommodate 10,000 evacuees. Pets are allowed and there will be a play area for children, according to authorities.

Turner said there were about 10,000 people at the GRB at 6: 30 p.m. on Tuesday.

About 50 Texas National Guard personnel to help with security at the GRB.
