Suspect arrested in beating of woman at convenience store

Russell Wayne Collins, 26, charged with assault

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested a suspect in connection with a seemingly random attack on a woman inside a North Side convenience store.

Russell Wayne Collins, 26, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon on a charge of assault. Jail personnel said early Wednesday morning that their records show Collins had already been released or was set to be let out soon.

Police believe Collins is the man who was caught on surveillance cameras two weeks ago inside the store in the 1600 block of Blanco Road.

A 55-year-old woman told police that the man, who she didn't know, suddenly attacked her, unprovoked.

The woman said he grabbed her by her neck and dragged her toward the back of the store where he beat her.

The attack left the woman's face swollen and bruised.

A relative of the woman spoke out about the attack and shared the surveillance photos with KSAT 12 News on Sept. 25, hoping to help police track down the suspect, who had red hair and a beard.

In the black and white mug shot, Collins appears clean-shaven with closely cropped hair.

An arrest warrant affidavit said the victim identified Collins in a photo lineup.
