Police use sergeant's body cam to find theft suspect who fled traffic stop

G'angelo Shineti Portillo, 19, charged with theft of firearm

SAN ANTONIO – A suspect is in custody and a stolen gun is off the streets after police arrested a 19-year-old who fled during a traffic stop.

Investigators said a sergeant’s body camera played a big role in the takedown.

It started as a traffic stop on Feb. 3 at the Whataburger in the 1400 block of San Pedro Avenue.

The sergeant said he saw gun ammunition in the suspect’s pocket and when he tried to handcuff the man, the suspect took off.

Police found a fully loaded handgun that was reported stolen in 19-year-old G'angelo Shineti Portillo’s car.

Authorities said Portillo had run from the scene, but a still picture from the body camera the sergeant was wearing was used to find him on a public Facebook post. He was then linked through a high school ID.

Hill Country Village police were then able to find their suspect.

Portillo is charged with theft of a firearm.
