Floresville ISD adding grief counselors after Sutherland Springs church shooting

FLORESVILLE, Texas – There will be extra counselors at all Floresville Independent School District schools Monday morning, less than 24 hours after a gunman walked into a church and began shooting

26 killed, 20 wounded in mass shooting; Gunman dead

“We are devastated by the tragedy in Sutherland Springs,” superintendent Sherri Bays stated in a Facebook post. “Our hearts are breaking for the families of the deceased and injured. These are our community members, friends, students and their families.”

Bays said there will grief counselors available to help students and staff affected by the shooting.

The district will also re-route several bus routes that will be closed during the investigation.

“We understand that this is a difficult and concerning time for our community and want you to be assured that we will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to monitor our campuses,” Bays said.

The shooting at First Baptist Church in Southland Springs, Texas left 26 people -- ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old -- dead and 20 wounded, authorities said.  

Devin Patrick Kelley, of New Braunfels, has been identified as the gunman.

Kelley walked into the First Baptist Church and began shooting around 11:20 a.m., before fleeing in a vehicle, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said. Witnesses said Kelley was dressed in all black tactical gear and a ballistic vest. A Department of Public Safety official said he was carrying a Ruger ARb assault-type rifle.
