'Several thousand pounds' of rebar traps, injures construction workers

SAN ANTONIO – One person was taken to an area hospital via AirLife and two others were taken by EMS after a concrete and rebar structure collapsed on construction workers Saturday afternoon.

Authorities said a crew was working on the structure near the Southton Rail Yard in the 12000 block of Center Road when the rebar tipped over and fell on them, trapping seven workers under the rebar.

A total of three people were taken to hospitals, two with "scrapes and bruises." One of the people taken was taken by AirLife in critical condition. He was not responsive after the accident.

Battalion Chief Brooke Hildeth said the concrete and rebar structure weighed "several thousand pounds."

Hildeth said there were about 15 people working when the accident happened. Other employees worked together to lift the rebar mat to get their trapped co-worker out.
