PEARSALL, Texas – A disabled San Marcos man who was being held by immigration officials has been released.

Felipe Abonza-Lopez, 20, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient, was picked up Oct. 11 by Border Patrol in Uvalde County, along with four undocumented relatives.

Abonza-Lopez was stripped of his DACA status and now faces deportation.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released a statement this week saying Abonza-Lopez was arrested during the course of a human smuggling investigation, but his lawyer said he was denied due process and had faced cruel treatment at the hand of guards.

Abonza-Lopez was released last night in Pearsall.
